you always have to be careful when making soap using this process as it involves caustic chemicals. You have to
keep in mind that anyone can make soap but because caustic chemicals are involved in the process, you have to
follow the safety precautions given in order for you to have fun and at the same time, be safe at all times.
In the workspace, make sure that you have the floor covered with old newspapers. This will really prove to be
invaluable should you spill any liquefied soap or lye mixture on the floor.
You need to keep in mind that you should have all that you need in order for you to avoid stopping in the middle
of the process, which can jeopardize the entire soap making process.
You have to remember that forgetting about the necessary equipments and ingredients may cause you to rush, which
can create opportunities for accidents to happen or result in poor soap quality. Always keep in mind that have
everything that you need prepared.
In the cold process of soap making, it will involve the use of lye. Always remember that lye is an extremely
corrosive substance, which is why you will want to take special precautions and preparations in order to avoid
accidents related to lye. Here are the following guidelines that will help you with the process of making soap
using the cold process safely and also a fun experience.
It is very important to select the right equipment when you are making your own soap using the cold process. For
example, always make sure that the mixers you use will not disintegrate when it encounters lye. Wooden spoons can
work great with lye for stirring but it will eventually disintegrate after multiple contacts with this corrosive
substance.
For stirring mixtures with lye, stainless steel, hard rubber, and silicone are good choices.
You should choose dishwasher safe pitchers to hold the lye. Because of the high temperatures that they lye
processing can reach, you will want to be sure that the container you use will not disintegrate in your hands.
To test whether the container you plan on using can be suitable for lye, try filling them up with boiling water
and let them sit on the sink for a couple of minutes. Then, try picking up the container and see if the container
retains its original form. If it does, then this container is a great choice.
Never chose a container that bends or softens when in contact with hot substances. You will want handles for
your containers, which does not bend.
When handling lye, always remember that it is extremely corrosive. You have to remove any jewelry you may be
wearing. You should wear protective safety gear, such as safety goggles and heavy rubber gloves when handling lye.
Even in finished soap, the lye will continue to be corrosive until it has completely set.
If lye or the lye solution comes in contact with your eyes, flush the area with cold water. You should continue
flushing for several minutes up until the lye is totally rinsed off. However, if the burning sensation on your eyes
persists, you should consult your doctor immediately.
You should remember that the fumes that lye produce can be harmful to your lungs. You should always take care
not to breathe the fumes from the lye mixture or from the lye granules.
When moving your container of lye, always use two hands. Always place one hand on the handle and the other on
the bottom of the container. This will ensure stability and additional safety should the handle break or when your
hand slips off the handle. In addition to that, it will reduce the possibility of accidental burns from spilled
lye.
The containers that you use for lye should never be used for food. Even after you clean the container, lye will
continue to remain in the container. You have to keep the containers you use in soap making process in a safe
location and label them in order for the other people in the household know what you used the container for.
These are the things that you have to remember about soap making process. With these safety precautions, you can
be sure that you will avoid accidents and make the process of soap making fun.
